Storey Farm was established in 1927.  Lawrence Storey, a veteran of World War I, along with his wife Mattie Storey, were able to purchase this property with the money saved while working for Mississippi Southern Railroad and Sharecropping at this location.  This farm house and barn setting on this property was constructed in the early 1930’s.  Most of the materials for the house were obtained from an older farm home sitting where the Pecan Orchard is now.  New materials for building projects were very hard to come by during the economic hardships of the Great Depression, so what we call repurposing today was a wide spread practice and means of survival for Mississippi farmers during this time period.  At the peak of farm production, the Storey family raised cattle, hogs, chickens, eggs and produce for Vicksburg and Warren county grocery stores and residents.  During the peak of the Great Depression and into World War II, the Storey Farm was commissioned by the State Government to produce Sweet Potato’s for local food relief programs.  Lawrence and Mattie Storey had four children, one of which was my father; Lawrence or better known as Junior.  Mattie Storey would be delighted to know that their home is being considered for such a memorable event.
